What to do if your luggage is lost or damaged?

Traveling is a part of our life. Each year, millions of travelers use air transport services. Very often, the luggage is either lost or damaged by the Airline. It can happen to everyone. Therefore we share our tips on what to do if Airlines lose or damage your luggage.

In case of damaged luggage:

  • Keep your boarding pass and checked-in luggage receipt. Alternatively, you can also use any other document issued by the Airline and containing your unique booking number.
  • Collect the evidence – upon receiving the damaged baggage, take photos and videos and make sure the damages to luggage or to the items inside are clearly visible.
  • File the Property Irregularity Report as soon as possible. Although you have 7 days to do it, it is recommended to do it while still being at the airport.
  • Upon filing the report, a unique number will be assigned to your case. Keep this number too. Present you damaged luggage to the Airline and negotiate on the possible forms of compensation (either monetary compensation, buying the new item, etc.)

Take into account that you can improve your success chances while negotiating with Airline if you present the receipts confirming the price you paid for the damaged luggage or other items.

In case of delayed luggage:

  • Keep your boarding pass and checked-in luggage receipt. Alternatively, you can also use any other document issued by the Airline and containing your unique booking number.
  • File the Property Irregularity Report as soon as possible but preferably while still being at the airport.
  • Upon filing the report, a unique number will be assigned to your case. Keep this number too.
  • You might have to spend some money to replace your personal items until you get your luggage back. Keep the receipts. Once you get your baggage, present these receipts to Airline and request compensation.

Take into account that the Airline will only reimburse the costs which were reasonably necessary. You have 21 days to request such reimbursement from the date of returning your baggage.

In the case of lost luggage:

  • As in the case of delayed luggage, you have to file the Property Irregularity Report, while still being at the airport. Keep the unique case number assigned to you.
  • The luggage will be considered as lost if you do not receive it within 21 days from the flight, or earlier if the Airline acknowledges that the luggage is lost.
  • You might have to spend some money to replace your personal items until your luggage is declared as lost. Keep the receipts and present them to Airline and request compensation.
  • While filing the Property Irregularity Report, describe the items in the luggage in details, as much as you can. This will help you get paid for the damages by the Airline.
  • Once the luggage is declared lost, submit the claim to the Airline and attach the list of items inside as well as the receipts for the personal items you bought.
